Digital support and apps for children and young people

The information on this webpage is based on the iThrive model. It is intended to help signpost and refer children and young people to appropriate mental health and wellbeing services. This tool should be used as guidance and not to to replace clinical judgement.

Getting advice

Children, young people and families who need advice and signposting. This group includes both those with mild or temporary difficulties, and those with fluctuating or ongoing difficulties who are managing their own health. 

CAMHS website for young people up to 18 years

The Herefordshire and Worcestershire CAMHS website brings together information, resources and signposting for children, young people and families across the two counties. The website includes information on local and national services, plus guidance on managing common mental health symptoms such as stress, anger, worry and low mood. 

Kooth for young people aged 11 - 25 years

Kooth offers safe and anonymous online mental health support and counselling for 11-25 year olds. In addition to one-to-one text-based support from qualified practitioners, there is a range of activities and self-help resources designed to support building valuable life skills.

Lumi Nova for young people aged 7 - 12 years

Lumi Nova is a fun for children to learn skills on how to break down big goals and self manage their worries. Families living in Herefordshire and Worcestershire have free access to Lumi Nova; a digital therapy in the format of a mobile app to help children and young people learn to self-manage, reduce symptoms of anxiety, build resilience and thrive.

Other helpful resources:

  • The Blues Programme   is a wellbeing programme for young people aged 13-19. Over six weeks, it teaches emotional resilience, and reduces low mood and anxious thoughts. 
  • Worcestershire ChatHealth  is a service where 11-19 years olds can text 07507331750 to speak to their School Health Nurse for confidential advice and support around a variety of issues, including bullying, emotional health, relationship problems, alcohol and drugs.
  • YoungMinds Textline  offers you free, 24/7 text messaging support wherever you are in the UK. If you need someone to talk to about how you’re feeling, text YM to 85258.

Getting help

Children, young people and families who need specific interventions relating to their mental health need. This group includes those who would benefit from evidence-based help and support with clear aims and agreed criteria for assessing if these aims have been achieved. 

Melo for young people aged 0 - 25 years

Melo, provided by Onside is designed to support young people aged 0-25 and their families who need support to address early mental health issues, promote wellbeing and build emotional resilience. Clinicians and professionals from Onside and Action for Children provide a range of individual, group and specialist interventions designed to develop coping skills and boost emotional resilience. The team also provide specialist and risk management support.

Wellbeing and Emotional Support Teams (WEST) in Schools for young people aged 5 - 18 years

The Wellbeing and Emotional Support Teams (WEST) in schools service is designed to help children and young people ages 5-18 years access mental health and wellbeing support early on in educational settings. The team offer short term support delivered by education mental health practitioners (EMHPs) and senior practitioners, using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) methods to help with low mood, wellbeing, anxiety and behavioural difficulties . Where needed, the team can support with referring young people to more specialist support.

Children can access support through their Schools Mental Health lead , and those attending local sixth form education can refer themselves online through the online self-referral form.

Talking Therapies for young people over 16 years

There are many situations in a person’s life which may cause stress, anxiety, low mood or depression. We hope to provide you with support and information that will help you feel yourself again. Our teams are trained and experienced in supporting a wide range of more common mental health issues. This often involves ‘talking therapy’ approaches which may be delivered through groups and courses, as well as 1-2-1 support.

If you're over 16 and registered with a GP in Herefordshire or Worcestershire, you can refer yourself to the NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire Talking Therapies. If you need support completing a referral or require information in an alternative format please call 0300 013 57 27 and we will be happy to assist you. 

Getting risk support

Melo for young people aged 0 - 25 years

Melo, provided by Onside is designed to support young people aged 0-25 and their families who need risk support. Onside’s Wellbeing and Emotional Support Practitioner (WESP) act as key workers to support families, providing advice and access to support designed to mitigate risk. WESP’s provide a range of generic and specialist group support to assist young people in managing risk.

CAMHS CAHTT for young people aged 0 - 25 years

The service supports children and young people experiencing a mental health crisis, undertaking assessments for those admitted to the paediatric ward for self-harm and suicidal ideation (wanting or thinking about taking their own life) or presenting in crisis within the community. The team offer follow-up appointments and emergency assessments, 7 days a week.

Worcestershire Safe Haven 

Provides telephone support and face-to-face appointments to Worcestershire residents who are experiencing a mental health crisis. Call 01905 600400 any day of the week between 6pm and midnight for support and signposting.

Herefordshire Mind Safe Haven

If you find yourself in crisis or need urgent support with your mental health, the Safe Haven is a safe and friendly place that you can come and access mental health support and advice. The Safe Haven telephone and email support service is available every evening, 7 days a week, from 5pm to 10pm; call 01432 372407 or email safehaven@herefordshire-mind.org.uk.

If you are experiencing something that makes you feel unsafe, distressed, or worried about your mental health, you can now contact the Herefordshire and Worcestershire 24 hour urgent mental health helpline by calling NHS 111 and selecting the mental health option.

They provide a range of specialist support delivered by Mind clinicians including therapy, bereavement and sexual abuse counselling and one to one interventions. They also deliver a range of specialist groups for symptoms such a self-esteem, anger, disordered eating, ADHD and Autism, and self-harm.

Core CAMHS for young people aged 0 - 18 years

CAMHS comprises of a series of teams designed to support the mental and emotional wellbeing of children and young people up to the age of 18. Across our teams, the service aims to support young people through conditions including; psychosis, disordered eating, anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, Autism, self-harm and complex trauma. The service also has specialist teams for young people in crisis, have a learning disability, and looked after children.
