How to use this resource

The information in this document is based on the iThrive model. It is intended to help clinicians signpost and refer children and young people to appropriate mental health and wellbeing services. This tool should be used as guidance and not to to replace clinical judgement.

The framework was originally developed by a collaboration of authors from the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families in 2014. The THRIVE Framework conceptualises need in five categories;

Getting advice

Children, young people and families who need advice and signposting. This group includes both those with mild or temporary difficulties, and those with fluctuating or ongoing difficulties who are managing their own health.

Getting help

Children, young people and families who need specific interventions relating to their mental health need. This group includes those who would benefit from evidence-based help and support with clear aims and agreed criteria for assessing if these aims have been achieved.

Getting risk support

Children, young people and families who need risk management support and/or urgent help.

Getting more help

Children, young people and families who need more extensive and specialised interventions and support relating to their mental health needs. This group includes those who would benefit from evidence-based help and support with clear aims and agreed criteria for assessing whether these aims have been achieved. The input from services like CAMHS might be more extensive with specialist treatment.
