Integrated Services for Looked After Children
We specialise in helping looked after children from 0-18 years of age, who may need help with their health, emotional wellbeing and their mental health. We may also work collaboratively with CAMHS in where neccessary.
If their early conditions are generally safe and healthy, children usually develop a healthy attachment relationship with their parents or carers, sometimes called a ‘secure attachment’. Looked after children often develop ‘insecure attachments’ due to their complex traumatic childhood experiences. This means they might have problems trusting adults and may find it hard to feel safe, happy and healthy.
A looked after child is defined as a child who has been in the care of their local authority for more than 24 hrs.
Trauma and attachment can affect children’s physical and mental health. When supporting looked after children, we sometimes also help their foster parents, kinship carers and siblings.
Our team is made up of professionals from different backgrounds including;
- Specialist looked after children’s nurses
- Mental health practitioners
- Social workers
In most cases we see children and families in their own homes. We also have a therapy base at St Johns Library, Glebe Cl, Worcester WR2 5AX.
The team offer health assessments, carer advice and support, consultation, training, and therapy.
The Green Fingers Project is also closely linked to the service, who are funded by the Big Lottery and in association with Worcestershire Children First. The project works exclusively with looked after children and adopted young people and their carers, helping them through training and activities to improve their health and wellbeing.
Green Fingers staff include community leisure development workers, educational mentors, and sessional workers.
